What is Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY)?
SSY is a government savings scheme launched under 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' initiative for girl children below 10 years. It offers the highest interest rate (8.2%) among small savings schemes with complete tax exemption under Section 80C. The scheme matures when the girl turns 21.
Who can open an SSY account?
Natural or legal guardian can open SSY account for a girl child below 10 years of age. Maximum 2 accounts allowed per family (one per girl child). Third account is allowed only in case of twins or triplets as the third child.
What is the minimum and maximum deposit in SSY?
Minimum deposit is ₹250 per year (can be deposited in one or multiple installments). Maximum is ₹1,50,000 per year. Deposits must be made for 15 years from account opening. After 15 years, only interest accumulates until maturity at 21 years.
When can I withdraw from SSY account?
Partial withdrawal of up to 50% of balance is allowed after the girl turns 18, for higher education or marriage expenses. Full maturity withdrawal is at 21 years from account opening. Premature closure is allowed for marriage after age 18 or in case of account holder's death.
Is SSY interest and maturity amount taxable?
No, SSY enjoys EEE (Exempt-Exempt-Exempt) status - the best tax treatment. Your deposits qualify for 80C deduction (up to ₹1.5 lakh), interest earned is completely tax-free, and the maturity amount is also 100% tax-free.
What happens if I miss depositing the minimum amount?
If you fail to deposit the minimum ₹250 in a year, the account becomes inactive. To reactivate, you need to pay ₹50 penalty per year of default along with the minimum deposit. The account can be reactivated anytime before the girl turns 15.
