Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is this calculator?
We use actual historical NAV data from the official AMFI database (via mfapi.in). The calculations are based on real daily NAV values, so the results are highly accurate. However, this assumes a lumpsum investment on the specific date and does not account for entry/exit loads or taxes.
Does this include dividends?
For Growth plans, dividends are automatically reinvested and reflected in the NAV, so yes. For IDCW (dividend) plans, the payouts would reduce NAV, and this calculator shows the NAV growth only - actual returns would be higher due to dividends received.
Why might my actual returns differ?
Actual returns may differ due to: (1) Entry/exit loads charged by the AMC, (2) Transaction dates (we use closest available NAV), (3) Dividend distributions for IDCW plans, (4) Capital gains tax when you sell. This calculator shows pre-tax, pre-load returns.
How far back does the data go?
NAV data availability varies by fund. Older funds like HDFC Top 100 have data from 1996. Newer funds may only have a few years of data. The calculator will use the closest available date to your selected period.
Can I use this for SIP investments?
This calculator is designed for lumpsum investments. For SIP analysis with monthly investments, you would need to calculate each installment separately. We plan to add SIP time machine feature soon!

Understanding Mutual Fund Returns: CAGR vs Absolute Returns

📈 CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate)

CAGR represents the mean annual growth rate of an investment over a specified time period longer than one year. It assumes compounding and gives you the steady rate at which your investment would have grown each year.

CAGR = (Final Value / Initial Value)^(1/Years) - 1

Example: ₹1L growing to ₹2L in 5 years = 14.87% CAGR

đŸ’¯ Absolute Returns

Absolute return is the total percentage gain or loss on your investment, without considering time. It simply shows how much your investment has grown or declined in total.

Absolute Return = ((Final - Initial) / Initial) × 100

Example: ₹1L growing to ₹2L = 100% absolute return

Pro Tip: Use CAGR to compare investments of different durations. A 100% return over 10 years (7.2% CAGR) is less impressive than 50% over 3 years (14.5% CAGR).

Key Metrics to Analyze Mutual Fund Performance

NAV (Net Asset Value)

The per-unit price of a mutual fund. NAV = (Total Assets - Liabilities) / Total Units Outstanding. A higher NAV doesn't mean the fund is expensive - it just reflects past growth.

Expense Ratio

Annual fee charged by the fund house (typically 0.5% - 2.5%). Lower expense ratios mean more of your returns stay with you. Index funds usually have the lowest expense ratios.

Benchmark Index

A reference index (like Nifty 50) against which fund performance is measured. Active funds aim to beat their benchmark; index funds aim to match it.

Standard Deviation

Measures volatility or risk. Higher SD means more price fluctuation. Equity funds typically have SD of 15-25%, while debt funds have 2-5%.

Sharpe Ratio

Measures risk-adjusted returns. Higher is better (above 1 is good, above 2 is excellent). Shows how much extra return you get for each unit of risk taken.

Alpha

Excess return over the benchmark after adjusting for risk. Positive alpha means the fund manager is adding value. For index funds, alpha should be near zero.

Tips for Analyzing Mutual Fund Past Performance

đŸŽ¯

Look at 5+ Year Returns

Short-term returns can be misleading. A fund's true performance is visible over complete market cycles.

📊

Compare with Benchmark

A fund returning 15% when Nifty returned 18% isn't impressive. Always compare against relevant benchmarks.

⚡

Check Consistency

Funds that beat benchmark consistently across years are better than those with one exceptional year.

👨‍đŸ’ŧ

Fund Manager Tenure

If the fund manager who generated past returns has left, future performance may differ.

💰

Consider AUM Size

Very large AUM in small/mid cap funds can limit agility. Very small AUM might indicate low investor confidence.

📉

Check Downside Capture

How did the fund perform during market crashes (2020, 2008)? Lower drawdowns often indicate better risk management.
